Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, popularly known as Katy Perry, was born on October 25 in Santa Barbara, California. Together with her two her two siblings, a brother and a sister, they were brought up in a strict and conservative household where only gospel music was allowed. However, this did not deter Katy Perry from listening to other sorts of music secretly with her friends. It was this strict upbringing that propelled Katy Perry to pursue a career in gospel music as a teenager. She signed with Red Hill Records, releasing her studio album titled “Katy Hudson” in 2001. However, it was not successful and she moved to Los Angeles in 2002 to pursue a career in secular music. She recorded a few songs with some music labels but her albums could not be produced because of various reasons. She was dropped by labels such as Columbia Records and The Island Def Jam Music Group, before signing a contract with Capitol Records in 2007. This turned out to be her turning point especially after producing the hit single ‘I Kissed a Girl.’ The song was a major success, topping many music charts in many countries and even emerging on top of the ‘U.S Billboard Hot 100’ list. Some of her other titles include “California Gurls,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),” “Firework,” and “E.T.” which topped the “Billboard Hot 100.” These songs were from her hit album Teenage Dream (2000). It was also the first time that a female artist had produced five number one songs in the U.S. Katy Perry also became the first artist to reach a billion views on Vevo with her “Roar” and “Dark Horse” videos. She is also the winner of various awards such as the Brit Award, the Guinness World Record and the Juno Award. She is also named in Forbes as one of the “Top-Earning Women in Music” (2011-2016).
